(Paris): Editions Filigranes (1995), 1995. Limited Edition. Folio. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. 319 pp. Fine. Item #CNJL799
De Luxe edition, limited to 250 copies (220 for sale), this no. 122, with a separate folio of 20 examples of the "Rares et Curieuses" volumes in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Presented in the French fasion of unbound signatures in a heavy paper wrap, separate folio of examples also unbound, TEXT IN FRENCH. Roger Devauchelle (1915-1993) was apprenticed at an early age to a bookbinder and eventually trained in all aspects of bookbinding. He opened his own bindery which, as a family business, is still in operation today as the Atelier Devauchelle. This volume reviews bookbinding in France, its history and techniques, as well as providing a biography of the better-known French bookbinders and showing many examples of their work. ***DESCRIPTION: Presented in individual signatures within a heavy paper wrap, the work is lavishly illustrated with both diagrams and photographs, in both colour and black and white, arranged by time period, index of binders at the back; folio in size (approximately 13" tall), pagination: (1)-319 (including colophon), this no. 122 of the 220 de luxe versions (plus 30 not for sale). Accompanying the volume is a separate folio with 20 examples of some of the treasures in the Library of France, each a glossy photograph (most in colour) mounted on heavy card stock with printed notes below the photograph, the folio of the same heavy paper as the wraps for the volume. Both the volume and the folio of examples are enclosed in a slipcase covered with aubergine coloured laid paper. ***CONDITION: Overall in fine condition, the individual signatures are clean and crisp although there are some very shallow creases to the gutter edge of several of the signatures (which will likely flatten out once bound); there is also some shallow creasing and a hint of dustiness on the first page of the first signature (blank page) else fine. The wrap enclosing the signatures is fine, clean and uncreased. The separate folio and its examples is fine as well. The slipcase is overall fine, strong and sturdy, with a small stray mark or two. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
