The founder of the People's Republic of China Mao Zedong (1893-1976), while transforming China into a world power, was the leader of a totalitarian regime which, through its policies and actions, "resulted in tens of millions of deaths, mainly through famine, as well as political persecution, prison labor, and executions" (n.b., quote from Wiki).

This set presents his writings ordered by historical periods, and in its comprehensiveness will provide interesting insights into the thoughts of this man who had such an impact not only on his country, but on the entire world.

As of this writing, this the only set online to offer all five volumes.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full faux maroon leather over boards with gilt lettering on the front and spine, frontis of Zedong in Volumes I and V, olive green ribbon markers; binding small quarto size (9" by 6 3/8"); Volume I the 3rd printing published in 1975, with 347 pp., Volume II also the 3rd printing, 1975, with 468 pp., Volume III the 2nd printing, published in 1967, with 290 pp., Volume IV the 4th printing, published in 1975, with 459 pp., and Volume V the first printing, published in 1977, with 518 pp. Note that all text is in English except the last page of each volume (printer's statement?) and at the tail of the spine of the slipcases. Each volume in the original dust jacket, the first four volumes uniformly designed, the front panel with a reproduction of a bas-relief of Zedong in profile and with brown and red lettering, the spine with brown lettering and the volume number in red, the back panel and both flaps plain, the jacket for the fifth volume with the same front panel but the spine with a different layout. All five volumes in their original heavy cardboard slipcases which have been assembled with heavy staples, the spines stamped with the same information as the spines of the jackets.

___CONDITION: Volumes fine overall, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; Volume IV with an old bookseller ticket pasted onto the verso of the rear free endpaper. The jackets all near fine, clean, with truly minor wear including a few very short closed tears and light sunning to the spines. The slipcases better than very good, remarkably free of wear but all with some degree of light soil, the slipcase for Volume I with old pricing information in both heavy marker and pencil.
