François Couperin; and the French Classical Tradition; New Version, 1987
London: Faber and Faber, (1987). Hardcover. Octavo size, 526 pp. Near fine / near fine. Item #CNJL2539
"This is the classic, definitive study of the life and works of the great French composer, Couperin le Grand, in a wholly revised and rewritten version. At least one third of the book, which first appeared in 1950 and is long since out of print, is completely new.
"A great strength of the book - and one which broadens its appeal far beyond music - is its exhilarating concern with all aspects of cultural life in France at the time of Louis XIV, the Sun King. The interrelationship of society life, literature, painting, architecture and music in the 'grand siècle' is here described as never before" (n.b., from jacket flap).
