"La Bourgogne" is a history of Burgundy, a region in France well-known for its vineyards and winemaking; this book comprises the history and development of the region, as well as the tradition of winemaking among the counties. With much local history, this book is a charming study of French countryside traditions particular to Burgundy. Included also are original drawings by Louis W. Graux (1889-1962), a French landscape painter whose sensitive colours deeply capture the warmth of the French terrain. The volume is in original wrapers folded over endpapers, offering a delicateness that complements the gentle mark making of the illustrations.

___DESCRIPTION: Original wrappers folded over endpapers, red and black lettering on the front wrapper and spine, with a red and black illustration of people working in a vineyard on the front wrapper and a black-and-white vignette on the back wrapper, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, title page with black-and-white illustration, brown and black linocut headpieces throughout, numerous original drawings in multiple colours of the people and landscapes of Burgundy by Louis W. Graux throughout; quarto size (11" by 9"), pagination: [1-6] 7-138 [139-141] [1 colophon], please note that this volume is in French.

The interior is clean and bright with very slight toning, with a strong, square text block; a few phrases underlined in pencil by the prior owner, prior owner pencil notations on the title page and in the outer margin of one illustration; overall, though with exterior wear, the interior is clean and the illustrations are bright, offering a unique look at this French region.
