As the authors wrote in the Foreword: "On the following pages are some of the most beautiful, finely printed books produced during the twentieth century...." Despite their admission that the task of choosing just one hundred books printed in the span of one hundred years was "daunting" (ibid), they persevered and the result is this list.
Any collector of fine press books will be certain to find many old friends within these covers, and perhaps, as the authors state in closing the Foreword, they may "come to appreciate new ones."
This one of the 1000 copies published by The Grolier Club, of which this is one of 250 hardbound copies. Note that this is not one of the 50 copies (alas) which contained an original leaf and was signed.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in dark blue cloth over boards, gilt lettering debossed on the front and spine, grey laid paper endpapers, title page in black, grey, and gold, small errata slip mounted onto the Contents page, the reproductions of title or sample pages mostly in colour and full-page; binding folio size (12 1/4" by 9 1/8"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xxx, [2] [100 pages with title or sample page reproductions] [2] 103-110 [1, blank] [1, colophon].
___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a hint of dustiness to the cloth, else as new.
