Two Consolations; With an Excerpt from Una Jeffers' English Journal
[San Mateo, California]: [The Quercus Press], 1940. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 250 copies, quarto size, 12 pp. Near fine. Item #CNBR506
American poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) was a prolific writer of the twentieth century; his bleak and uncompromising style of poetry was formed through his philosophy of "inhumanism", which focused on a rejection of emotion and man, in favour of nature and other creatures in the universe.
This work contains two unusually mellow poems ("Only An Hour" and "Vanished Englands") by Jeffers that were inspired by a family visit to Kelmscott Manor in 1929, as described in the excerpt from Una's Journal which precedes the poems. The work is enhanced with a title page illustration of Kelmscott Manor, a copy of a frontispiece by William Morris himself.
Interestingly, this work was printed on an Albion press that was once used by Morris and was later owned by Theodore Lilienthal, of Gerber-Lilienthal Books, San Francisco, under his Quercus Press imprint. Lilienthal and his wife, Frances, were avid collectors of the works of Robinson Jeffers, thus it is fitting that he be the publisher for this work.
