Robert Alter, professsor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley, had made a new translation of the first book of the Bible, which was published, with full scholarly apparatus, by W.W. Norton in 1996. It lacked the Hebrew text, and is provided in the Arion edition. All copies were accompanied by a copy of the Norton book to provide Alter's introduction and notes to readers of this deluxe edition.

The types Hadassah for the Hebrew and Lydian for the English, were designed by Henri Friedlaender and Warren Chappell, both students of the great German calligrapher, type designer, and arts-and-crafts leader, Rudolf Koch (1876-1934), who work Hoyem collects. The type was computer generated and printed by letterpress from polymer plates.

The type-setters in Israel asked if our rabbi would proofread the Hebrew. We answered that Professor Alter would do that. Alter's translation conveys the semantic nuances and lively orchestration of literary effects of the Hebrew and at the same time has stylistic and rhythmic integrity as literary English.
