With twelve charming colour plates and numerous line drawings, by Maginal Wright Enright Barney (1881-1966), the younger sibling of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Enright studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a year, then worked for a Chicago engraving firm for three years. Over the course of her career she would illustrate over sixty books, as well as providing artwork for magazine covers and patriotic posters during WWI (n.b., information from the web site of Illustration History).
The author of the stories, Clara Ingram Judson (1879-1960) was a prolific author; in addition to this book, she wrote almost eighty other books, and was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award posthumously (n.b., information from the web site of Evanston (IL) Women).
Scarce in the marketplace: as of this writing, we see no other copies online.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full dark brown cloth over boards, the front board with a mounted colour illustration (found on p. 46 in the book), white lettering debossed on the spine, pictorial endpapers, colour frontispiece one of twelve bound in throughout, illustated title page in black, vintage bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown ("Capwells Books, Oakland"); binding octavo size (9 1/4" by 6 5/8"), pagination: [6] [1-2] 3-93. With a portion of the original dust jacket (see Condition statement below) with the same colour illustration as on the book's front board on the front panel, publisher's ad for "The Windermere Series" on the back panel, short summary of the book on the front flap, back flap blank.
___CONDITION: Volume a bit better than very good, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the white on the spine has almost completely flaked off (leaving the lettering looking as though it was debossed in blind), light toning to the endpapers from the jacket, and evidence of old, light damp at the top fore-edge corners for the first and final few leaves (intruding on neither text nor illustrations). The dust jacket came to us in pieces; we had a professional (name available upon request) adhere it to archival paper in order to preserve as much as possible; the top few inches of the front panel are missing, as is most of the spine (please see pictures and request more if needed).
