The legal proceedings surrounding the story of Archy Lee, an African-American born into slavery in Mississippi, brought to California. Once there he fought for his freedom, at first taking refuge and, when found, in the courtroom which is the main focus of this book. A story not well enough known about how slavery was viewed in California in 1858.
The illustrator, Harold Mallette Dean (1907-1975), was an active painter, printmaker, muralist and illustrator who illustrated for the Grabhorn Press for fifteen years and taught in several art schools in the San Francisco area.

___CONDITION: Book fine, the boards clean, the mounted paper label on the front board utterly without wear, the corners perfectly straight and unrubbed, a square, strong text block with solid hinges, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, and as new. The dust wrapper near fine with very light edgewear, else fine.
