After many vicissitudes - in the course of which we are shown a comprehensive picture of the social and political life of Central Europe in the early years of the seventeenth century - the pilgrim finds God, and his journey ends in a revelation of visionary joy..." This GCP publication with pen drawings in two colours by Dorothea Paul Braby (1909-1987), who studied art under John Farleigh and Noel Rooke, and also in Florence and Paris.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in cream buckram with images after two of Braby's illustrations on both boards, rust lettering and publisher's device on the spine, top edge gilt, two-colour full-page frontispiece, title page in two colours with a small illustration, each chapter with a two-colour chapter headpiece by Braby; Caslon Old Face with Imprint Shadow titling on mould-made paper, binding small quarto size (10 1/4" by 6 5/8"), pagination: [1-4] 5-271, this copy no. 84 of 300 copies issued in cloth (there were 70 copies bound in morocco).
___CONDITION: Near fine, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a few light marks to a few pages, some light specks of foxing to the initial preliminary and final pages, light dustiness to the bottom board edges, and some sunning to the back board.
___CITATION: Cock-A-Hoop, no. 186, which has 1951 as the publication date, although the book has the date of 1950.
