The eleventh limited edition from The Allen Press, and the first book for The Book Club of California printed outside the U.S, the second to have been printed outside of California. As with all of the Allen's books printed in France, this work was accomplished through great challenges, financial risk and ambition; we encourage a reading of the entry for this book in the Allen Press Bibliography for full details. The short story by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) is about a young cavalier venturing into the gray evening light only to unexpectedly encounter a strange door; nevertheless, we are assured that a happy ending awaits.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in the French style, stiff wrappers enclosed in glassine, lettering in red to upper wrapper, backstrip with title in black, title-page with text enclosed in a blue and red pictorial border, gray running headlines, four full-page plates in four colors; hand-set Garamond type, hand-made paper from the Richard de Bas mill, octavo size (8 1/8" by 5 5/8"), [1-9] 10-60 pp., limited edition, one of 300 copies. Enclosed in a white imitation leather portfolio and matching slipcase with gilt lettering to backstrip of the portfolio, with the prospectus loosely laid in.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, in a fine case; the wraps clean and without wear, original glassine wrapper present, also clean and without wear, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and the volume entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The portfolio and slipcase near fine, strong and sturdy and with minimal wear; the prospectus fine.
