"The Book of Ruth" has offered inspiration to many printers, with its lovely message of familial devotion and a simple, devout faith in the Hebrew God. This edition was "designed and hand printed by Vincent Stuart at Flansham, July 1934" per the colophon. We were unable to find much information about Mr. Stuart other than a very short Wiki article, which lists this as the first title by the Press.
This copy with the With Ex-Libris of Walter A. Frankel, author, and at one time the Curator of the Rare Books Division, Free Library of Philadelphia, the Ex-Libris by Reynolds Stone (see "Reynolds Stone Engravings", p. 86, plate D.).
Scarce in the marketplace; as of this writing, we see only a single other copy online; our search of OCLC locates six copies with institutions.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter brown linen over paper-covered boards, paper label mounted onto the front board with green lettering and decorations, the Ex-Libris of Walter A. Frankel on the front paste-down, both the endpapers and the text pages of a light green, illustrated frontis and title page in gold and green, decorations and initial captitals in gold and green throughout; binding quarto size (11 3/4" by 7 1/2"), pagination: [i-iv] 1-23 [1, colophon], issued in an edition of 50 copies, this no. 48.
___CONDITION: A bit better than good, the interior pages fine, clean, without wear, with many signatures unopened; structurally about good only, several gutters beginning to crack (although all signatures still secure), the boards with overall foxing and light soil, the corners rubbed. Even with its faults, still a charming, somewhat scarce version of this perennial favourite.
