The Story of Rosina; and Other Verses

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1895. Thomson, Hugh. Hardcover. Small octavo size, 120 pp. Very good. Item #231128031

A lovely collection of poems by Henry Austin Dobson (1840-1921), which speak of a simpler time.

With illustrations throughout by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920); Irish by birth, he lived most of his life in England and was known as "an instinctive artist with little formal training". His style, which he founded, is referred to as "The Cranford School", distinctive for its "nostalgic, affectionate and slightly whimsical approach to historical themes." As such, he was the perfect artist to illustrate "The Story of Rosina", as well as the works by Jane Austen among many others.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full red cloth (this title was also issued in green cloth), the front and spine lavishly decorated with gold after illustrations by Thomson, top edge gilt, Thomson's black-and-white line drawings throughout, many being full-page, others half-page, others being chapter head-pieces; binding small octavo size (7 3/4" by 5 1/2"), 120 pp.

___CONDITION: Very good, the boards clean, straight corners with light rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean with a few spots of foxing, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light wear at the head and tail of the spine and the bottom edges of the boards, the spine lightly sunned, foxing to the text block edges, and the volume slightly cocked; even with its few faults, still a lovely copy.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility.
