Rollin Milroy has earned an enthusiastic and devoted following through his attention to detail and exquisite letterpress printing.
This checklist is itself a work of art, replete with tipped-in specimens. Although, as Milroy wrote in a letter announcing the book, the book is "Heavenly Monkey's next / sort-of-last publication." He would issue, two years later, "The Lady, or the Tiger? [bound tête-bêche with] The Discourager of Hesitancy", also under the "HM" imprint.
Issued in an edition of only forty copies, the first ten containing extra specimens in a box. Again, we cannot help but quote from the same letter: "I do not call these deluxe, they simply are extra. I do not recommend them to anyone who actually owns HM books. My best hope is that the extras might prove useful to institutions in some educational or cautionary context."
Accompanying the book is the aforementioned letter, as well as a separate "sort-of announcement" which replicates some of the pages in the book, along with a selection of cuts.
___DESCRIPTION: Parchment paper back lettered in black with painted paper over boards, Ingres endpapers, frontis a cut of a print shop with a monkey-headed character in center stage, title page in black and brown, the calligraphy by Martin Jackson, the Contents page lists the books published by Milroy under both the "Heavenly Monkey" imprint as well as "HM Editions", the Dramatis Personae page lists those who have been involved in the enterprise, marginalia throughout in Milroy's hand, some of which are printed and some manuscript; folio size (the binding 12 1/8" by 8 1/2"), pagination: [1-4] 5-[66] [1, colophon] [1, press mark], with an additional speciman tipped onto the rear flyleaf; total edition 40 copies, this no. 19, the colophon signed by Claudia Cohen, Barbara Hodgson, and Rollin Milroy.
___CONDITION: Fine, we acquired it directly from the publisher; it remains clean, crisp, and as new.
