New York: Harper and Brothers [printed in Sweden by Centraltryckeriet, Stockholm], . Beskow, Elsa. Hardcover. Oblong folio, 34 pp. Near fine. Item #22030510
A lovely children's picture book about a young boy who went out into the forest to pick blueberries ("and whortleberries") as a name-day present for his mother, and his adventures after he was befriended by Father Blueberry, the "king of the Blueberry Patch". Each scene is an endearing depiction of Buddy and his new friends, with their adventures in the forest with animals, insects and plants.
The text and illustrations both by one of the best-known of Swedish children's authors, Elsa Bewkow (1874-1953), who would write and illustrate about forty children's books, as well as illustrating songbooks for Swedish schools and ABC books.
While we see several other copies online as of this writing, we see none in this condition; a wonderful addition to any collection of children's books.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in paper-covered thick cardboard with a cloth shelf-back, the front board with an illustration of blueberry bushes with insects and snails, lettering in red, blue and yellow, the title page mirrors the front board, each page a full-page illustration with the text inset; oblong folio (12 5/8" wide by 9 1/2" tall), unpaginated with seventeen leaves, each printed on the recto only.
