East of Siam; Ramblings in the five divisions of French Indo-China

New York: The Century Co., (1926). First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, octavo size, 370 pp., in publisher's dust jacket. Fine / very good +. Item #21092403

Per the jacket flap, "[t]his book completes the record of a two years' sojourn and wandering among the peoples of eastern and east central Asia, a record begun with 'Glimpses of Japan and Formosa,' and continued through 'Wandering in Northern China' and 'Roving Through Southern China'."

Although without the "DD" monogram, the book (and matching jacket) almost certainly designed by the firm of the Decorative Designers. A stunning example, a fine condition book in a VG+ to NF jacket, the folding map also fine.

___DESCRIPTION: Binding design in black and yellow against green cloth, the spine with a small decoration in yellow and black, half-tone full-page frontis, this the first edition (with only the copyright date on the title page and no further printings), the book replete with additional half-tone reproductions of photographs by the author, there being fifty-eight inserted pages most of them with two images each, also inserted is a map of French Indo-China folded into four panels (one fold horizontal and the other vertical) in five colours (yellow, green, blue, red and black); octavo size (8" by 5 1/2"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xvii [1, blank] [1-2] 3-357. The publisher's dust jacket repeats the pattern on the front board in gold and black inks on light green paper, it also repeats the spine with the addition of the publisher's device, summary of the book on the front flap, publisher's ad for another book by the same author on the back flap, the back panel devoted to travel books by Franck.

___CONDITION: Volume fine, the boards clean, the yellow and black inks strong and true, without rubbing or flaking, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, the folding map fine, clean and without tears, and entirely free of prior owner markings; there is a vintage bookseller ticket at the top of the rear pastedown ("The White House, San Francisco") with some light rubbing directly below (presumably a prior owner wanted to erase the printed price), else clean and as new. The dust jacket much better than very good, clean other than a very few light stray marks, the corners not clipped, with light overall edgewear including a few small chips and very short closed tears, none affecting the lettering or design; some sunning to the spine and perimeters of the panels.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility.
