Mount Vernon, New York: Peter Pauper Press, [1939]. Angelo, Valenti. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 200 copies, sixteenmo size, 23 unnumbered pp., signed by Valenti Angelo. Fine. Item #18041734

American author Stephen Crane (1871-1900), best known for his Civil War novel "The Red Badge of Courage", wrote in the Realist and Naturalist styles; "The Blood of the Martyr" is a political satire, in the form of a play, critical of German imperialism taking place in China through the work of missionaries. Crane's work as a war correspondent adds depth and perception to his stories as he provides deep insight into current events through his fiction.

This volume decorated by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), an Italian printmaker and illustrator who created stunning linocuts of the American Southwest, as well as book illustrations for the Grabhorn Press in San Francisco. Here, his creation of elegant borders and headpieces complements the writing to create a lovely publication of one of Crane's plays.
