Dutch-American artist Peter Spier (1927-2017) presents the national anthem of the United States of America with colourful illustrations of the American Revolution on every page; Spier was a prolific author of children's books, and his work has earned him several awards, such as the Caldecott Medal in 1977 and the National Book Award in 1982 for "Noah's Ark".
This volume comes with a poster of numerous flags from the American Revolution and the then-new United States' Government; Spier draws these flags with a fine eye for detail and historical accuracy.
___DESCRIPTION: Full blue cloth with colour illustration and black lettering on the front board, white lettering on the spine, endpapers with colour illustrations of flags of the American Revolution and United States, title page with colour illustration by Peter Spier, full-page colour illustrations by Spier throughout; folio size (12.5" by 9"), 49 unnumbered pages. In a blue paper dust jacket, with colour illustration and black lettering matching the front board, white lettering on the spine, a description of the book on the front flap, and author bio on the rear flap; the dust jacket is unclipped with the original price of $5.95 on the front flap. With poster featuring the flags of the American Revolution, the United States, and its Armed Forces, in full colour, folded twice, inside the original envelope with a selection of the flags on the front.
___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and corners, and corners are gently bumped, else fine. The dust jacket is near fine, unclipped, clean with bright colours, light edge wear to the head and tail of the spine and corners, and a few spots of soiling to the verso. The poster and its envelope are fine, clean with bright colours, without wear.
