London: Virtue & Co., 1872. First Edition. Hardcover. Twelvemo size, 448 pp. Very Good Plus. Item #SB2354

First edition of this work, which strives to enable the reader, in the study of commerce of nations, to "distinguish mere coincidence from causation, and also to discern, among historical incidents acting as causes, the fluctuating from the fixed, the transient from the permanent" (from book's preface). Written chronologically, commerce from ancient times, through the medieval (including Byzantium, Saracen, and the Italian republics, among others), through "modern" - as of 1872 - times, this is a fascinating, thought-provoking treatise which, while certain elements may be dated by our early twenty-first century standards, still provides food for thought and reflection.
