Jacinta, A Californian Idyll, And Other Verses

New York: Doxey's, At the Sign of the Lark, 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Sixmo size, 79 pp. Near Fine. Item #SB1172

One of only a few books published by Howard V. Sutherland, much of this slim volume is comprised of an epic poem, "Jacinta", and includes approximately 20 shorter poems at the end, many with California and San Francisco as the subject. Published by Doxey's, of whom the founder, William Doxey, established a bookstore in downtown San Francisco which was the center of the San Francisco literary scene in the mid-1890's, who later moved to New York and published several books there (see the web site for Paul Elder & Co.). This volume has a vintage bookseller's ticket on the rear pastedown of Elder and Shepard, San Francisco.

___DESCRIPTION: Light brown paper boards with dark brown lettering on the front, plain endpapers, top edge gilt, sixmo size, pagination: (i)-viii, 1-70, followed by one page publisher's announcement of upcoming volumes.
