The Ingoldsby Legends; or, Mirth & Marvels

London: J.M. Dent & Sons, Ltd., Aldine House, 1930. Rackham, Arthur. Hardcover. Octavo size, 663 pp., in a custom binding by Riviere. Near fine. Item #PTBR004

Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), a clergyman in the Church of England, was situated in life such that he had a profusion of leisure hours which he filled, at least in part, by collecting legends and myths and re-writing them as the "Ingoldsby Legends", under a pen name.

The stories proved to be immensely popular, and the somewhat grotesque quality of Rackham's figures are perfectly suited to bring them to life. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) first illustrated "Ingoldsby" in 1898, with a subsequent edition being published in 1907 in a larger format and with additional illustrations. This 1930 reprint by J.M. Dent includes twelve colour plates and multiple black-and-white illustrations, some full-page and many in-text.
