San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1998. Kendrick, Mel. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 198 of 300 copies, square quarto size, 63 pp., signed by Mel Kendrick, with original publisher's white paper wrapping. Fine. Item #CNRD04

A writer of both prose and poetry, William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) combines the two forms in this series of "Improvisations", a prose poem. A physician as well as a poet, Williams was associated with various movements in art and literature during his life, including modernism and imagism, and his work shows his unceasing dedication to experimental forms using American language.

Illustrating this Arion Press edition is Mel Kendrick (b. 1949), an artist who works primarily in sculpture using different materials such as wood, bronze, and paper; his woodcuts in this volume adhere to the chaos explored in the text, a tangled web of abstract forms and interior spaces.
