San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1998. Perez, Vincent. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 241 of 250 copies, quarto size, 121 pp., signed by Vincent Perez and Andrew Hoyem, with prospectus, with original publisher's white paper wrapping. Fine. Item #CNRD01
An early science fiction story by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), best known for writing "The Jungle Book", "With the Night Mail" is set in the twenty-first century, though written a hundred years earlier; the story features the Aerial Board of Control, a fictional organisation that appears in several other works of science fiction, most notably in H. G. Wells' "The Shape of Things to Come" in 1933. Unlike much of Kipling's writing, which draws on his experiences in India, this work predicts a world full of aeronautical technology and air travel, a precursor to the burgeoning field of science and speculative fictions.
Illustrating this Arion Press edition is Vincent Perez, a fine artist, anatomist, and professor at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco; Perez has a loose, confident style of drawing that realises a world of action in Kipling's speculative fiction.
