Images by Richard Avedon (1923-2004), whose "fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century" (from NY Times obit). This work depicts many of the rich and famous of the era, including Lauren Bacall, Balenciaga, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Paloma and Claude Picasso, Elizabeth Taylor - and many more. Inscribed by Avedon on the front free endpaper, "For Berni", dated 1980 - possibly a fellow photographer, Berni Schoenfield.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in glossy pictorial paper boards, black lettering on the spine, Avedon's large, flowing signature on the front free endpaper with a date of 1980 with the inscription "For Berni", stated first edition on copyright page (per Zempel, this publisher "usually" used such statement for first printings); folio in size (approximately 14" tall), unpaginated. Clear acetate dust wrapper with a facsimile of Avedon's signature in red on the front and a listing of personages included on both flaps.
___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior pages are clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some dustiness to both endpapers and some light smudges around Avedon's signature, almost like fingerprints. The clear acetate dust wrapper is near fine with no tears or soiling, some light creases at the head of the spine and light dustiness.
