The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes

London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. First or second printing (identical), twenty-fourmo size, 85 pp., in a custom clamshell box. Very good. Item #CNJWEM056

Beatrix Potter (1866-1922) is likely one of the most beloved of childrens' book authors, for having given the world "Peter Rabbit" and his many companions, which have delighted children - and adults - for generations.

By the time of the publication of "The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes" Beatrix Potter had developed a following both in Britain and in America; some believe that this story, with its characters including chipmunks, bears, and grey squirrels was written with an American audience in mind, as they would recognize these animals; in fact, there are references in her manuscript for this story to animal characteristics found within "American animals" (n.b., Linder p. 208).

___DESCRIPTION: Dark green paper boards with white lettering, pictorial onlay on the front board of squirrel in a red jacket, colour frontis of two grey squirrels, title page vignette of Chipmunk, twenty-six additional colour plates throughout; twenty-fourmo size (5 5/8" by 4 3/8"), pagination: [1-7] 8-85 (note that pagination includes the reverse sides of the colour plates which were left blank). Housed in a custom box of quarter green leather with light green cloth sides, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, inner trays lined with decorative paper.

___CONDITION: Very good, or perhaps slightly better; the boards clean, the paper onlay clean and unrubbed, the text block strong with solid hinges, the interior mostly clean and bright (a few light smudges here and there), and the sole prior owner marking being a single name ("Nora"?) in vintage ink at the top of the front free endpaper; text block slightly cocked, the corners very gently bumped and the bottom front corner slightly rubbed, the head of the spine very slightly rubbed, a very short (approx. one-eighth inch) closed tear at the fore-edge margin of the leaf for pp. 57-58, the gutter between pp. 78 and 79 slightly cracked, but the signatures securely in place. Custom box is fine, clean and utterly without wear. A lovely example.

___CITATIONS: Quinby 20, with the Quinby Plate X. colour pictorial endpapers, Linder p. 429.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
