Syd Hoff (1912-2004) is probably best known for "Danny and the Dinosaur", published in 1958. He began illustrating at an early age, selling his first cartoon to "The New Yorker" at the age of 18.
This work, "Little Chief", is one of over sixty volumes Hoff wrote and illustrated for the Harper series "I Can Read"; Little Chief "lived in a tent in a green valley" (from jacket flap) who "wished there were some children he could play with".
___DESCRIPTION: Pictorial glossy paper over boards, copyright page with no further printings noted, colour illustrations and text on every page; octavo size (8 5/8" by 6"), pagination: [1-4] 5-64. Pictorial glossy dust jacket (flaps matte finish) has a printed price of $1.95, summary of book on the front flap with the codes of "40-80", "No. 0225A" and "0861" on the lower corner, author bio on the back flap, publisher's ads on the back panel (all books listed published prior or during 1961 except the final title, published in 1962).
___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a hint of bumping to the corners, else as new. The unclipped dust jacket near fine, with a few very light spots of soil and a couple of very shallow creases.
