One of America's most esteemed writers Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name of Mark Twain, created classic characters and stories that have endured for generations; his writing is characterised by his wit and humour, evident in both his fiction and nonfiction.

This volume is the first UK edition of one of Twain's memoirs, wherein he relates stories baseon on his work as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River, and is filled with his characteristic wit and quotidian observations.

___DESCRIPTION: Full red cloth, line drawings in black on the front board and spine, gilt lettering on the front board and spine, publisher's device in black on the rear board, endpapers with tan floral all-over pattern, frontispiece a black-and-white engraving captioned "The 'Baton Rouge.' ", with tissue guard, title page with black-and-white illustration of a steamboat, black-and-white illustrations, some vignettes and some full page, throughout; duodecimo size (7.5" by 5.25"), pagination: [i-ix] x-xxv [xxvi] [1] 2-561 [562-564] (pagination starts over) [1] 2-32. Vintage bookseller's ticket on the rear paste-down, from "Philip C. Duschnes", in New York. Housed in a slipcase covered in red cloth with red marbled paper lining the inside.

___CONDITION: Volume is very good plus, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; boards are clean overall with faint soiling to the rear board, spine is sunned, some rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards and corners, head and tail of the spine and corners are gently bumped, off-setting to the first flyleaf, a few light spots of foxing and a small creases corner on the tissue guard, cracked gutter at pages 304 and 305, rear hinge starting. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean, some rubbing to the corners, corners at the spine are gently bumped.
