They Were Strong and Good

New York: The Viking Press, 1940. Lawson, Robert. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, quarto size, [68] pp. Very good / good +. Item #CNJWEM023

A charming history of the author's family, this volume is replete with Robert Lawson's (1892-1957) meticulous line drawings. The book won the Calecott Medal in 1941, and, so far, Lawson is the only author to have won both the Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Award, for his book "Rabbit Hill" in 1945.

___DESCRIPTION: Full cream cloth, blue border and illustration on the front board, blue lettering on the spine, endpapers with illustrations in yellow, title page with line drawing in black, line drawings, many full page, in black by Robert Lawson throughout; quarto size (10.25" by 8.5"), 68 unnumbered pages. In a red paper dust jacket with illustrations in yellow and black and white and black lettering on the front panel, white and black lettering on the spine, a description of the book on the front flap, and author bio on the rear flap; the dust jacket is unclipped with the original price of $1.50 on the front flap.

___CONDITION: Very good overall, with straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and the interior is clean and bright; soiling to the boards, mild bumping to the head and tail of the spine, light offsetting to the endpapers, and there a prior owner name written on the first flyleaf; although the outer boards of the book are soiled, overall the interior is solid and bright, with detailed and clean illustrations. The dust jacket is a bit better than good, unclipped, evidence of the Caldecott Medal having been on the front panel, overall light soiling and sunning to the spine, light edge wear, some chipping to the head and tail of the spine (but no loss of text).
