Ideal Book or The Book Beautiful (Cadenza Reprints on Typography No. 4)

London: Cadenza Press, 1987. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Sixmo size, 20 pp., in a design binding by David Sellars. Fine. Item #CNJL446

Design binding by David Sellars, Designer Bookbinder (1949-2015), based out of Great Britain. David was awarded a Fellowship of Designer Bookbinders in the mid seventies and served as President of the society for four years; his bindings are represented in most major libraries in the world and many private collections. This binding is almost in counterpoint to the book itself; for Cobden-Sanderson's essay on "The Book Beautiful" David designed a binding reminiscent of roughly-hewn boards, with small jewel-toned dots in the middle of both boards and on the book's edges, contained within a case of even rougher hew.

___DESCRIPTION: Leather spine with the author's initials lettered in gold in blindstamped circles; textured handmade paper over wooden boards, leather collage stripe on both covers; board and paper edges stained black with impressed colored circles; painted endpapers; custom tray and slipcase with matching textured handmade paper, title and colophon pages in red and black; 16 mo size (approximately 6.25" tall), unpaginated with 10 leaves, paper Chilham hand-made from the Hayle Mill, Bembo type; limited edition of "about 100 copies", unnumbered; designer binding by David Sellars, signed and dated 1988, in pencil on a rear flyleaf.
