Verses by Christina G. Rossetti

Hammersmith, London: Eragny Press, [1906]. Pissarro, Lucien. Limited Edition. Leather. Limited edition, one of 175 copies, octavo size, 75 pp. Near Fine. Item #CNJL374

Christina G. Rossetti (1830-1894) is known for her melancholy love poems, originally drafted in Italian. Her early verses for her mother, written between the ages of twelve and sixteen, were printed privately at her grandfather Gaetano Polidori's press, and are here beautifully reprinted from Polidori's 1847 edition of Verses. Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther founded the Eragny press in 1894, inspired by the arts and crafts movement and the work of William Morris of the Kelmscott Press. "Lucien Pissarro brought foriegn and unfamiliar sensibilities to his books. The distinctive use of color wood engavings which explore the Impressionist sensation endow Eragny books with a vital character unlike any other revivalist private press" (A History of the Eragny Press 1894-1914, p. 12)."
