Henry Adams (1838-1918), a descendant of two U.S. Presidents, became a noted political journalist and was best known during his lifetime for a 9-volume work on the History of the U.S. during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson; his posthumously published memoirs won the Pulitzer Prize in 1919. His letters are one of the vital chronicles of the life of the mind in America; a perceptive analyst of people, events, and ideas, Adams recorded, with brilliance and wit, sixty years of enormous change at home and abroad (from dust jacket of Volume I). The set takes us from his early years in Volume I (which opens in 1858) through the opening years of the twentieth century, when Volume VI closes with the year 1918. ***DESCRIPTION: Tan cloth boards with gilt lettering on the front and spine, dark brown endpapers, each volume has a frontispiece showing a different portrait of Adams, 9.25" tall, pagination: Volume I (i)-l, 1-574 ; Vol. II (i)-xii, 1-645 ; Vol. III (i)-xiv, 1-638 ; Vol. IV (i)-xl, 1-736 ; Vol. V (i)-xii, 1-726 ; and Vol. VI (i)-xii, 1-861.
