Published by the Yale University Press with their attention to quality and detail, all three volumes published on heavy paper and replete with both colour and black-and-white illustrations, housed in a sturdy publisher's slipcase. An important study, which "has justly acquired canonical status, becuase of the lasting validity of the 'bird's-eye view of the whole panorama' which Wittkower gave..." (ibid).

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full gold cloth over boards, gilt lettering with a rectangular border stamped onto the spines, text presented in two columns, replete with colour and black-and-white illustrations, comprehensive indices at the rear; quarto size (11 1/2" by 8 3/4"), pagination: Vol. I, [i-vi] vii-xv [3, "Principles Followed in the New Edition" plus two maps] [1] 2-114; Vol. II, [i-x] [1] 2-198; Vol. III, [i-viii] [1] 2-194. Pictorial dust jackets are not clipped (but without a printed price), with summary of the book on the front flaps and author bios on the back flaps. All three volumes housed in the publisher's sturdy cardboard slipcase covered with pictorial glossy paper.

___CONDITION: Volumes all fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and all volumes are entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The unclipped dust jackets also fine, clean, the colours bright, without any wear; the slipcase also fine, strong and sturdy, without tears or splits, free of soil but with a few scattered light marks.
