Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks

Princeton and Oxford: Princeton University Press, 2000. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing of this publication in English, eleven volumes in twelve books (complete); quarto size, approx. 8880 total pp. Fine / fine. Item #CNJL2315

"I would like to write a novel in which the main character would be a man who got a pair of glasses, one lens of which reduced images as powerfully as an oxyhydrogen microscope, and the other of which magnified on the same scale, so that he perceived everything relatively" (n.b., quote from the web site of the Princeton University Press). This quote of Kierkegaard's provides a tantilizing glimpse into the mind of one of the most influential thinkers of the nineteenth century.

We cannot introduce this series better than did the publisher: per the dust jacket flap of Volume I, "For over a century, the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55) has been at the center of a number of important discussions....Despite his relatively short life, Kierkegaard was an extraordinarily prolific writer...but [he] left behind...much UNPUBLISHED writing....by far the greater part of Kierkegaard's journals and notebooks consists of reflections on a myriad of subjects - philosophical, religious, political, personal."

This eleven-volume set (presented in twelve books) "represents the first English edition of Kierkegaard's journals based on up-to-date scholarship and reproduces the two-column format Kierkegaard employed in his journals, with one column for his initial entries and the second reserved for the extensive marginal comments he added later."

As of this writing, we see no other offerings on the used book sites for the complete set, although a handful of individual volumes are available.
