Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003. 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Three volumes (complete), quarto size, 2101 pp. Fine. Item #CNJL2235
"The Dictionary of American Family Names is a fascinating journey throughout the multicultural United States, offering a detailed look at the meaning and frequency of surnames throughout the country. For students studying family genealogy, others interested in finding out more about their own lineage, or lexicographers, the Dictionary is an ideal place to begin research" (n.b., from the web site of the Press). A wealth of information is included; in addition to the many entries, the first volume begins with essays as diverse as "Changing Society: Feminism and Family Names", "Typology of Family Names", "Ornamental and Arbitrary Coinages" and much more.
The Editor, Patrick Hanks (b. 1940), was educated in Britain and the Czech Republic, and has for decades been involved in scholarly research into lexicographical methodology, computational lexicography, and in the early 90s worked on the HECTOR project with DEC, much of which work was used in the development of one of the earliest search engines (something for which we all take for granted today). In addition to serving as Editor-in-Chief for this work, he has authored or co-authored countless other studies and papers on topics such as lexical analysis, lexicography, onomastics, and similes and metaphor.
