The first four volumes of would eventually be a nine-volume set of a Catalogue Raisonné of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), whose work not only garnered him international fame during his lifetime, but remains loved and appreciated today.
A magnificent production, each volume replete with reproductions of Sargent's work, almost all in full colour, both in-text and full-page. "Each work is catalogued in depth, with a biographical account of the sitter, a discussion of the contemporary context of the painting and a detailed provenance, exhibition history and bibliography" (n.b., from dust jacket flap, Vol. I).
___DESCRIPTION: Each volume bound in full black cloth with gilt lettering on the spines, different coloured endpapers, folio size (12.5" by 10 1/8"), the pictorial glossy dust jackets each with examples of the work contained therein, a summary of the particular volume on the front flap and bios of the authors on the back flap. Details as follows: Volume I ["Early Portraits"] a fourth printing, pagination: [i-ix] x-xxvi,  2-278; Volume II ["Portraits of the 1890s"] a first printing, pagination: [i-ix] x-xxvi,  2-211; Volume III ["The Later Portraits"] a first printing, pagination: [i-ix] x-xxxii,  2-331; and Volume IV ["Figures and Landscapes, 1874-1882"] a first printing, pagination: [1-7] 8-446.
___CONDITION: Volumes fine, with clean boards without marks, straight corners free of rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and all volums are entirely free of prior owner markings; the dust jackets are fine overall, unclipped (although with no printed prices), clean, not sunned, perhaps some extremely light edgewear but overall a fine set.
