Armin Theophil Wegner (1886-1978), a pacifist, served during World War I as a nurse and witnessed the Armenian genocide about which he publicly spoke out, even writing an open letter to President Woodrow Wilson. In 1933 he wrote a letter to Adolf Hitler condemning the persecution of the Jews, for which he was imprisoned and tortured. For his heroism in speaking out he is included as one of the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
Felix Martin Furtwangler (b. 1954) is a German painter , graphic designer and book artist, whose works are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Yale and Harvard Universities, the Bavarian State Library, and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munchen, among many others.
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter natural linen with pictorial paper over card boards, pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated with Furtwangler's powerful black and white woodcuts, we counted sixteen full-page woodcuts including the frontispiece, many smaller woodcuts throughout the text; octavo size (approximately 9.5" tall), unpaginated with 30 leaves total, all text in German, limited edition, this no. 14 of 40 copies with a separate colour woodblock print, artist signature both on colophon page as well as on the colour print. Wallet of linen over boards enclosing a separate color woodblock print which folds out accordion-style with six panels (length when open approximately 40"), both enclosed in publisher's slipcase with decorated paper sides and spine.
___CONDITION: Volume is overall fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the corners are very lightly rubbed, else fine. The colour woodblock print is fine; the wallet enclosing the color print is near fine with very light edgewear; the slipcase housing both pieces is also fine.
