The Kingdom of This World

Limited Editions Club, (1987). Juarez, Roberto. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 331 of 750, signed by Alejo Carpentier and Roberto Juarez, with LEC Monthly Letter. Fine. Item #CNJL204

A significant novel by Cuban author Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980), "The Kingdom of This World" depicts Haiti and the time surrounding the Haitian Revolution led by Toussaint Louverture; Carpentier uses the historical events to explore themes of violence, sexuality, voodoo, and destiny. This publication by the Limited Editions Club includes etchings by Roberto Juarez (b. 1952), a painter and muralist who often depicts floral motifs in his work; his etchings here show strong, bold line work in their portrayal of elements of nature. Each etching uses chine-collé, a method in which the image is printed on a thin rice paper bonded to a heavier paper for support during the printing process.
