n.p. e. artinian, (2000). Limited Edition. Spiral bound. No. 10 of 10 copies, duodecimo size, 19 unnumbered pp., signed by the publisher. Fine. Item #CNJL138

Emily Artinian, a book artist who creates text-based work with a focus on story-telling, made this accumulation of lines translated from Mikhail Lermontov's (1814-1841) work "A Hero of Our Time". Several lines from the book are presented in six different translations, with the few words identical in each translation printed in orange. This is a fascinating comparison of translation work, depicting the different interpretations and how each can wildly change the meaning of the sentence.

Five images of Lermontov are included throughout, on leaves opposite of the translated lines, and an excerpt from the foreword to Vladimir Nabokov's translation is printed on the recto of the second to last leaf.
