Lager Lieder

Providence, R.I. Ziggurat Press, [1991]. Feldman, Walter. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Number 12 of 17 of the special edition, oblong quarto size, [30] pp., signed by Walter Feldman, with prospectus. Fine. Item #CNJL1249

Walter Feldman (1925-2017) was an art professor at Brown University and established the Ziggurat Press in 1984. This work is an illustrated collection of the songs that were sung in concentration camps, transcribed and translated from the Polish record album, Piesni Obozowe (Songs of the Concentration Camps), Polskie Nagrania: Muza, 1979, #SX1715. The songs were sung by Beligian amateur singer and performer Aleksander Kulisiewicz in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp where Mr. Feldman was a prisoner from 1939 to 1945; after the war he collected the songs and performed them on the record.

The authentic ledger folders used for binding are painted in black stripes, evocative of the uniforms worn by camp prisoners. Feldman states, "When I first saw the Lager Lieder I knew immediately that I would have to compose visual accompaniments for these powerful and frightening words. All aspects of the book were designed hopefully, to provide the appropriate setting, including the ledger folders (actually from the 1930s) to the authentic tattoo members in the title."
