An in-depth look at the history of the book in France, from the Middle Ages through the year 1950. Volume I, Le livre conquerant, covers the Middle Ages through the 17th century; Volume II, Le livre triomphant, the years 1660 to 1830; Volume III, the Romantic period through the Belle Epoque; and Volume IV the years 1900 to 1950. Each volume is replete with black and white photographs, a selection of photographs in colour, charts, graphs, reproductions of title pages, etc. Beautifully presented on ivory laid paper, the text easily read in three columns; please note, all text is in French. ***DESCRIPTION: Hardbound in glossy cream-coloured boards, titles in gold surrounded by decorative rectangle on the fronts and also on the spines, plain endpapers, title pages in red and black, each volume opens with an introduction and a Table of Contents, followed by a chronological table showing, by century, what is happening in several areas: political, social/historical, developments of certain books, and important personages. Each volume closes with an extensive Bibliography and Index. Quarto size (text block being 11.5" tall), pagination: Volume I, 631 pages; Volume II, 654 pages; Volume III, 540 pages; and Volume IV, 611 pages (count excludes coloured plates); original ribbon markers in each volume. The dust jackets are also of laid paper with different illustrations on the front reflective of the time period being reviewed; they are not price-clipped although there are no printed prices present. ***CONDITION: Volumes are near fine, with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and all volumes are entirely free or prior owner markings; due to weight there are some minor bumps to the boards and a short (approximately one-eighth inch) tear at the head of the spine of Volume I, the rest of the volumes are fine. The dust jackets are also near fine, with scattered minor edgewear and some yellowing to the jacket flaps; there is also some type of film covering part of the jackets which is not visible to the eye but can be felt. ***POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely heavy, and therefore additional postage will be required as the standard will not cover costs.
