(Newton, Powys): (Gwasg Gregynog, 1998), 1998. Williams, Kyffin. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 245 of 350, folio size, 41 pp., signed by Kyffin Williams. Fine. Item #CNJL1101
The four tales known as "The Four Branches of the Mabinogi" together constitute the chief glory of Welsh medieval prose literature. Pryderi is the only character to appear in all four tales and provides the theme taken by Llewelyn Wyn Griffith (1890-1977) in a series of radio talks for children given on BBC Wales in 1943.
Nineteen years later, in 1962, "The Tales of Pryderi" was published by the University of Wales Press, with illustrations by Leslie Jones. Kyffin Williams, then rapidly establishing himself as one of the foremost Welsh artists of the century, also produced a set of illustrations to accompany Griffith's text. These line-cuts remained unpublished until Kyffin Williams generously donated them to Gwasg Gregynog in 1997, with this book being published the following year (n.b., above from the book's Preface).
