London: The Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust, 1968. Blake, William. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 694 of 700, octavo/twelvemo sizes, 172 total pp. Fine. Item #CNJL1056

Poet, printer, and artist William Blake (1757-1827) is arguably the most original and highly-regarded English authors of all time. Although thought mad by his contemporaries, he was also held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work.

Blake’s work has been spectacularly reproduced by Arnold Fawcus and his Trianon Press, which has an undeniable claim to being the finest press of its kind in the last century and has long been known for its unrivaled artworks in fine colour printing. This publication contains the plates from Blake's "The Gates of Paradise", first titled "For Children" and then later "For the Sexes"; with an introductory essay by surgeon and noted Blake scholar Sir Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982) and facsimiles of Blake's preliminary drawings for the plates, these volumes are a beautiful and scholarly look at the process behind Blake's work.
