Llandogo, Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, (2002). Limited Edition. Hardcover. Number 14 of 200 copies, quarto size, [64] pp., signed by the translators and the artist, with prospectus. Fine. Item #CNJL1039

The first collection of expressionist poetry by Romanian poet/philosopher Lucien Blaga (1895-1961), "one of the most important of Romanian poets". A man with many talents, he earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Vienna; edited the magazines "Culture" and "The Banat"; was posted as the diplomat for Romania to Warsaw, Prague, Lisbon, Bern and Vienna; and served as University Professor of cultural philosophy at the University of Cluj beginning in 1939. In 1948 he was dismissed from that post because he refused to support the new Communist regime, being delegated to the role of a librarian; forbidden to write, he was only allowed to translate. In 1956 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, resulting in the Romanian Communist government sending emissaries to Sweden to protest the nomination; his poems were forbidden in Romania until after his death. (N.B., quotes from the Old Stile Press, info from Wiki.)

Enriched with challenging abstract landscapes by Welsh artist Sara Philpott; these composed by a mix of drawing, monotype and collage which "resonate perfectly with the atmosphere and moods of the poems". The poetry is immensely powerful and evocative; an important poet for any lover of 20th century poetry, presented perfectly here by The Old Stile Press.
