Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

New York: The Dial Press, 1976. Pinkney, Jerry. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, no Newbery Medal on dust jacket, octavo size, 286 pp. Fine / fine. Item #CNFBV09

Mildred D. Taylor (b. 1943) creates beautiful stories and powerful characters that deal with racism and oppression in the Deep South; "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" takes place in Mississippi during the Great Depression, and tells of nine-year-old Cassie Logan and her family as they struggle to survive. The novel is narrated by Cassie, and it is from her perspective that we learn about the racism in The South and the importance of land and family in bleak circumstances.

This volume is the first edition of Taylor's book; the book won the Newbery Medal in 1977, and therefore the first printing does not have the medal on the dust jacket. The dust jacket and frontispiece are by Jerry Pinkney (b. 1939), an award-winning children's book illustrator who received the Coretta Scott King Award for lifetime achievement in 2016.
