Artist, book designer, papermaker, poet and teacher Walter Hamady was the founder of the Perishable Press and Shadwell Paper Mill; he is best known for artists' books and fine letterpress publications. In 1966 he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he taught papermaking, letterpress printing, and bookbinding for more than thirty years.
Philodemos of Gadara "was born in Syria, studied in Athens and taught (Horace and Virgil attended his lectures) at the Epicurean School in Naples...Many of the papyrus rolls that survived Vesuvius' biggest blast under the ash and lava...near Pompeii are of his works on various topics" (n.b., from foreword).
___DESCRIPTION: String bound (coptically sewn by hand) in handmade blue shadwell paper wraps, Ex-Libris on the front free endpaper of D. Steven Corey ((d. 1991), Special Collections Librarian for the University of San Francisco and co-author of "Eric Gill: A Bibliography), title page with title and press name in both Greek and English, fore- and bottom edges uncut; handmade papers include Roma, Persusia, Sakmoto, Kumoi, handset text, octavo size (8 1/16" x 5 1/4"), unpaginated with fourteen leaves all printed on the rectos only (save the copyright page on the verso of the title page), one of 143 copies, unnumbered. Although in wraps, also with a dust jacket of the same blue shadsell paper the front with a blind debossed design.
___CONDITION: String binding is strong, both the jacket and the wraps are clean and without wear, corners are neither bent nor rubbed, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the Ex-Libris referred to above free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, and as new.
