Ditchling: St Dominic's Press, 1930. Jones, David. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 15 of 240 copies, octavo size, 41 pp. Very good. Item #CNBR370

The Saint Dominic's Press, founded by Harry (Hilary) Douglas Clarke Pepler, flourished at Ditchling, Sussex, from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable", with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand, believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'...product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine, handmade to machine-made paper, and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines."

___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black cloth with dark blue paper over boards, gilt title on spine, with two illustrations by David Jones: (i) the small illustration on the title page of "Basket of Flowers" (E 20) and (ii) "The Bride" (E 200) facing p. 1, errata in red following the title page; Caslon Old Face monotype on hand-made Batchlor & Son paper, octavo size (8.8" x 5.9") pagination: [i-ix] 1-32 pp.

___CONDITION: Volume is very good overall, with a strong, square text block and solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; front and rear covers have sunned considerably and the spine has begun to fray with short closed tears to both joints at the tail of the spine. Overall the interior is fine, the exterior is a little better than good with the gorgeous David Jones wood engravings.

___CITATION: Taylor & Sewell no. A201, which notes "two loose inserts: 'Errata' printed in red; 'Note' of previous publication of the poems." This volume has the Errata page tipped onto the Contents page, and is missing the Notes insert.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
