Small Archive of Allen Press Ephemera

The Allen Press, 1966 - 1992. No binding. 17 pieces of ephemera of varying sizes, in original mailing envelope, many with hand-written notes from the Allens. Fine. Item #CNBR277

Ethel Crockett-Aldridge was a prominent librarian in California. She (alone at first, and subsequently) with her second husband Jack Aldridge, were devoted collectors of The Allen Press limited editions. The correspondence in this small archive begins with Ethel Crockett in 1966, and continues through 1992, after her marriage to Jack. They were evidently members of The Book Club of California and The Roxburghe Club, with some of the ms letters and announcements referring to the clubs.

The friendship between the Aldridges and the Allens appears to have begun with Ethel as a customer, and eventually developed into a close friendship with regular intimate dinners. The archive includes announcements, Christmas cards, MSS notes, MSS postcards and letters (on The Allen Press stationary), and one prospectus. Altogether offering a unique glimpse at the congenial disposition of Lewis and Dorothy Allen, whose private lives remain fairly abstruse.
