San Francisco: The Book Club of California [printed at the Grabhorn Press], 1957. Audubon, John Woodhouse. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 400 copies, folio size, pp. Near fine. Item #CNBR166
John Woodhouse Audubon (1812-1862), the son of renowned artist and naturalist John James Audubon, joined the search for gold in California in 1849, when he led an expedition to California travelling through Mexico. The route was unusual and little-known, and provided much for Audubon in the way of artistic inspiration through scenes of flora and fauna. This collection of illustrations serves as a unique experience and record of his travels, with each plate accompanied by Audubon's notes on the region; printed with the permission of the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, only five of the illustrations were previously published.
This publication by The Book Club of California, printed at the Grabhorn Press, was part of the Exhibition of Western Books (Rounce & Coffin Club).
