English engraver Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) used his talents in many different avenues, such as engraving cutlery and wood blocks for advertising, before he turned to illustration; he is known for creating illustrated editions of Aesop's Fables throughout his life. This publication by The Book Club of California includes an original leaf from the first edition of "The Fables of Aesop" printed by Bewick in 1818, as well as a new impression taken from one of Bewick's original wood engravings, for the fable "The Boys and The Frogs", printed especially for this publication. These wood engravings show Bewick's delicate treatment of the image and his keen eye for detail, made more special by the accompanying narrative of his life against the backdrop of the printing of children's books in England, particularly the prominence of woodcuts as book illustrations.
