[Kentfield, California]: Mallette Dean (laid out at The Allen Press), 1959. Dean, Mallette. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 200 copies., quarto size, pp. Fine. Item #CNBR140
The lively firsthand account of John Charles Duchow's voyage on the Clipper Staffordshire from Boston around Cape Horn, on his way to California. After the Allens selected the text, designed the book, assembled the typefaces and purchased handmade paper for this edition, they unexpectedly moved to France; they then commissioned fellow-printer and artist Mallette Dean to complete the project. A fine example of unexpected collaboration, or as Lewis Allen admits, "changing boats midstream without capsizing."
Mallette Dean (1907-1975), a painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco, including on projects such as the WPA Mural Project and the murals in Coit Tower, was for fifteen years illustrating books for the Grabhorn Press and other area presses such as the Allens. He also operated his own press beginning in 1953 in Fairfax, Marin County.
